Black Christian Therapy

People of faith navigate mental health challenges just as others. Black Christian Therapy is a space where Black folks of faith can bring their true self. Research has shown that having spaces for people to create meaning from their lived experiences without feeling alienated decreases stigma and increases help-seeking behavior. While having religious or spiritual practices buffer us from some of the stressors of mental illness it does not make us impenetrable. Black Christian Therapy as an organization acknowledges the beauty of clinical and spiritual wisdom. We seek to shift the way Black people of faith access care, why they access care and with whom. We speak from a place of both expertise and experience. We are unapologetically passionate about black folks of faith increasing mental wealth. In my experience as both a research scientist, clinician and church-based mental health care provider I know the healing power of addressing both the spiritual and clinical needs of Black people. Check out our directory where you can search for therapist in your area. If you are therapist you can also sign up to join our directory. We have a series of workshops and courses for both followers and therapist. Ask us questions. Send us an introduction email and get to know us.

Biblical Reasons why people of faith should Consider counseling

…and pretty much everyone else should consider going too!

Proverbs 12:15 ESV

The way of a fool is right in his own eyes, but a wise man listens to advice.

We often see our lives within our own understanding, but the Bible says that the heart is deceitfully wicked. Talking to a licensed professional counselor can help you think through your decisions and thought processes.

Proverbs 11:14 ESV

Where there is no guidance, a people falls, but in an abundance of counselors there is safety.

For centuries in every culture group people have sought out faith, spirituality and wisdom. This is because most of us know that we do not know it all and along our journey having guidance is a gift. BCT helps make this gift a reality for many through technology and an online community.

Proverbs 19:20-21 ESV

Listen to advice and accept instruction, that you may gain wisdom in the future. Many are the plans in the mind of a man, but it is the purpose of the Lord that will stand.

Proverbs 1:7 ESV

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction.

Proverbs 19:20 ESV

Listen to advice and accept instruction, that you may gain wisdom in the future.

Proverbs 4:13 ESV

Keep hold of instruction; do not let go; guard her, for she is your life.

James 1:5 ESV

If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.

Hebrews 4:12 ESV

For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.

Proverbs 1:5 ESV

Let the wise hear and increase in learning, and the one who understands obtain guidance,

1 John 4:1 ESV

Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world.
